Accessibility

UL is striving to gradually make the public transit system more accessible to handicapped passengers. There is an action plan under way for this project, which was revised during the fall of 2009.

UL created this action plan to provide a structured approach for addressing accessibility issues in order to ensure that the entire trip is possible. This means not only adapting the vehicles used in public transit, but also working with other players to make sure that other parts of a trip, including the way to and from stations and bus stops, are feasible for handicapped passengers as well.

The goal of UL's accessibility project is:

  • All persons who can get to and from a bus stop or station, alone or with the help of an escort, should be able to travel with UL. The trip may not be the prohibiting factor.

Current status (August 2009)

The numbers report below reflect the current status as of August 2009. The numbers are constantly changing as old buses are replaced.

Regional buses

Of 270 regional transport buses, 84 are of the low-entry variety. This means that the floor of bus, extending from the front door to the rear door located in the middle of the bus, is free of steps. At the rear door is a fold-down ramp.

A total of 168 buses feature some kind of ramp or lift. Most lifts can handle 300 kg, meaning that even electric wheelchairs can be taken on board. Call UL Customer Service prior to your trip to find out which services feature this type of bus.
UL Customer Service can be reached at 0771-14 14 14.

Most buses feature illuminated signs which indicate the next bus stop. Automatic stop announcements will commence during 2009.

Stadstrafiken

95 percent of city buses are the low-entry variety, which means that the bus floor is level with many bus stops (230 of just over 700). The number of bus stops with raised edges and plates which make it easier for visually impaired people to board the bus is increasing all the time.
All city buses featured illuminated signs indicating the next stop, as well as automatic stop announcements.

Upptåget

All Upptåget trains have platform-level entry and feature a lift inside which can be brought to normal ground level.

The trains have stop announcements and illuminated signs that indicate the next stop.

On board each train is a train attendant who can assist travelers with special needs. e.g. helping visually impaired person to find a seat, to operate the lift or otherwise assist those who need help.

Uppsala Central (Resecentrum)

At Uppsala Central Station there are travel hosts who also serve as escorts.
To order an escort, call 018-10 50 70.

The escort service is open Monday - Friday 07:00 - 19:00. Effective August 29, there is also escort service on Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 to 18:00.
